Forum post - How to run a Football Combine with Dashr

40 yard Dash

The 40 yard Dash is a measure of linear speed. Since it is rare that a football player would need to run 40 yards in a straight line during a game, the 10 yard dash has become popular as a means to evaluate acceleration as opposed to top speed.

We recommend testing the 40 yard Dash with a 10 yard split. This requires 3 gates for the 10/40, or only 2 gates if you do not have a split.

Pro-Agility (5-10-5)

The Pro-Agility is a test of speed, explosion, body control, and ability to change direction. This drill uses a stationary start and requires 1 timing gate. For a 3-point start (the standard for football) we suggest using an additional gate. This gate is placed on a short tripod, aimed down the same line as main laser. This laser is blocked by the athlete's down hand.

L-Drill (3-Cone drill)

The L-Drill is a test of speed, quickness, flexibility, body control, and ability to change direction. This drill uses a stationary start and requires 1 timing gate. For a 3-point start (the standard for football) we suggest using an additional gate. This gate is placed on a short tripod, aimed down the same line as main laser. This laser is blocked by the athlete's down hand.

Broad Jump

The standing long jump, also called the Broad Jump, is a test of explosive leg power. It is one of the fitness tests in the NFL Combine and was also once an event at the Olympic Games. When using Dashr|Jump hardware for this test you can electronically perform this test with an accuracy of 0.01 in. You can also manually enter jump measurements into the Dashr app.

Vertical Jump

The vertical jump test is a test of lower body power and has been performed for over 100 years. When using Dashr|Jump hardware for this test you will need a Vertec or similar vane based system, and we will make it smart! You can also manually enter jump measurements into the Dashr app.

QB Reactive Agility

This is an adaptation of the Reactive Agility Drill that works on vision and reaction for quarterbacks. The QB has the ball (or it is hiked to him) while in the start laser. In performing a drop back, the QB crosses the trigger gate which turns on a React light at random. The QB has to recognize the light and throw to the appropriate receiver before they cross the stop laser. Example below of out routes.

Long Snapping

A long snap is so quick that it is nearly impossible to get an accurate hand time. Use our lasers as an adaptation of the Dash drill to get an accurate time. Set-up the starting laser on mini tripods where the ball is snapped from, and the stop laser just behind the net you are snapping to (on taller tripods). Run it just like a dash, you get the Go! message and then snap the ball. It hits the net that then crosses the stop laser.

Route Timing

Knowing how long it takes to get into position with your route takes practice. Reps after reps between receivers/backs/TEs with the QB. Speed up this process by putting a number to it. Example of a simple Out Route shown below, but it can be applied to any route.

Biometrics

Getting biometric/anthropometric data on your athletes is key for both evaluation and tracking progress. You can record bio data manually through the Dashr app, or you can use our BioStation to automate these measurements.
